The Punjab and Haryana High Court on Tuesday asked the state government how all except Amritpal Singh were arrested. Court said, if he has escaped, then it is intelligence failure. The High Court continued hearing a habeas corpus petition filed by the legal advisor of Waris Punjab De. In this, the court was requested to direct the defendants to present the fugitive self-styled Sikh preacher before it.
Justice N.S. Shekhawat asked Advocate General Vinod Ghai how he (Amritpal Singh) survived? To this he replied, we have arrested other accused in the case. The bench asked how everyone except Amritpal Singh has been arrested. The bench said, you have 80 thousand police. How was he not arrested? If he survived, it is an intelligence failure. The Advocate General said, this happens sometimes. G20 summit was also going on.
The High Court appointed advocate Tanu Bedi as an amicus curiae in the matter and adjourned the hearing for four days. The court has also sought a status report from the government. The Advocate General told the court that NSA has been invoked against Amritpal Singh. The Home Ministry may decide to transfer the case because of the terror link linked to Pakistan’s ISI. Amritpal is currently absconding and it is being said that he must have fled abroad. Tuesday is the fourth day when the agencies are conducting raids to nab him, but there is no trace of him.
