Xolo Maridueña, the 23-year-old star of Netflix’s hit series “Cobra Kai,” has taken a step away from the glitz and glamour of Hollywood to start a journey of self-discovery in the busy streets of New York City. After years of being in the spotlight, Maridueña found himself with an unexpected six-month break before his next project. “I’m here because for the first time in 10 years I have six months off,” he shares with a sense of relief and excitement.
A New Chapter in Brooklyn
Moving to Brooklyn was not just about finding a new home; it was about rediscovering himself outside the confines of his career. Living with fellow actors Jacob Bertrand and Peyton List, Maridueña describes his living situation as “a little built-in ecosystem” that allows him to feel connected while still exploring his individuality. He realizes that in his fast-paced life, he had rarely taken the time to be alone and reflect. “Now that I’m a man—now that I’m officially, without the asterisks, a man,” he jokes, acknowledging the growth he’s experienced in this new chapter.
Embracing New Experiences
Maridueña has been making the most of his time in NYC by indulging in quintessential experiences. From savoring sushi at local restaurants to enjoying late-night adventures, he’s embracing everything the city has to offer. He even finds joy in small things, like picking up a six-pack of beers at a corner bodega. “I recently grew fond of deli-made sausage, egg, and cheese sandwiches, another NYC rite of passage,” he laughs. These moments are not just about fun; they are part of a larger quest to understand who he is beyond his roles and accolades.
Reflections on Fame
Despite his rising fame, Maridueña has managed to maintain a sense of humility. He often reflects on the pressures that come with being in the public eye. Having starred in the DC film “Blue Beetle,” which features him as the first leading Latino superhero in the DC universe, he felt the weight of expectations. However, when the movie’s release was overshadowed by industry strikes, he found solace in the experience of watching it with kids who saw themselves represented on screen. “It didn’t leave a bad taste in my mouth in a way that I think it very easily could have,” he says, emphasizing the importance of representation.
The Future Ahead
While Maridueña remains focused on his self-discovery journey, he’s also looking forward to future projects. With discussions of an animated series following “Blue Beetle” and a romantic drama in the works, he’s excited about the possibilities. But for now, he’s taking things one step at a time, finding joy in the everyday experiences of city life and the friendships he’s cultivated. As he puts it, “I feel like a jellyfish. I’m ready for the wave to take me wherever.” His journey serves as a reminder that even amidst fame, personal growth and exploration remain vital parts of life.
