Bree Illing’s journey to the White Ferns is a tale of resilience, determination, and the power of following one’s dreams. As she gears up to make her debut for New Zealand’s women’s cricket team, she reflects on the challenges she faced and the support that got her here.
How did a surprising call spark an unexpected transformation?
It all started with an unexpected phone call. Illing’s life took a surprising turn when she answered a call from White Ferns coach Ben Sawyer, who had to confirm he reached the right number. Bree, who had almost given up on cricket due to a debilitating injury as a teenager, was ecstatic to learn she was selected for the squad. “I knew there was a Sri Lanka series and I kind of thought, ‘Oh, it would be cool if I could play’,” she recalled. The joy was palpable as she shared the news with her family, who were equally thrilled.
Overcoming Adversity through Hard Work
Illing’s journey hasn’t been easy. At only 13, she faced a serious back injury that almost led her to abandon cricket altogether. It was the support from her physiotherapist, Martyn Sigley, a former cricketer himself, that reignited her passion for the game. He took her under his wing, helping her rebuild her strength and confidence. “I wouldn’t probably have this opportunity if it wasn’t for one of my physios who’s a cricket fanatic,” Bree admits, highlighting the importance of mentorship in sports.
Balancing Education and Aspiration
In addition to her cricket career, Illing has also focused on her education. She recently graduated from the University of Auckland with a Bachelor of Science, majoring in exercise science and biology. Balancing her studies and her cricket career can be daunting. “It’s quite an unknown about what team you’re going to make, do you need to still keep studying and doing your other job?” she expressed. Yet, she is determined to keep her options open, eyeing a post-graduate diploma in forensic science.
A Promising Domestic Season
Bree’s hard work has paid off during her domestic season, where she showcased her talent in both the T20 Super Smash and the Hallyburton Johnstone Shield. She excelled as the second-top wicket-taker in the HBJ, grabbing 16 wickets. Her performance has not gone unnoticed, and she hopes to bring that momentum into the international arena. “Just trying to do the simple things right and consistently” has been her mantra, and it seems to be working wonders.
The White Ferns: A Dream Come True
As she prepares for her first match against Sri Lanka, the excitement and nerves are palpable. “I’ll be very nervous, but I’ll be very excited at the same time,” she said, reflecting on her anticipation of donning the White Ferns jersey. With her parents cheering from the stands, Bree Illing is ready to embrace this new chapter of her cricketing journey, embodying the spirit of perseverance and passion for the sport.
In a sport that is evolving and growing, Bree Illing represents the future of women’s cricket in New Zealand. Her story is not just about cricket; it’s about resilience, the importance of support systems, and the unwavering pursuit of one’s dreams.
